Is a Wedding Videographer Worth It?
It all begins with an idea.
When planning a wedding, you might find yourself asking: Do we really need a wedding videographer?
It's a fair question. Between the venue, photographer, flowers, DJ, catering, and everything else, wedding expenses add up quickly. But wedding videography gives you something that almost nothing else from your wedding day can: the ability to actually hear, see, and experience those moments again.
Wedding Photos and Video Capture Different Things
Wedding photography is incredible for freezing moments in time, but video captures something different.
You can hear the emotion in your partner's voice while reading their vows. You can watch your dad's reaction when he sees you dressed for the first time. You can hear the speeches, the laughter, and the voices of people you love.
Years later, those little moments can become some of the most meaningful parts of your wedding film.
How to Plan a Wedding on a Budget in Michigan
It all begins with an idea.
Planning a wedding is exciting, but once you start getting quotes from venues, photographers, caterers, DJs, and other vendors, the costs can add up quickly.
The good news is that having a beautiful wedding in Detroit or Metro Detroit doesn't mean you have to spend money on everything. The key is figuring out what matters most to you and building your wedding budget around those priorities.
Decide What Matters Most
Before booking anything, sit down together and choose the two or three things you care about most.
Maybe it's having an incredible venue. Maybe you care more about photography and videography because those are what you'll have after the wedding. Or maybe having amazing food and a packed dance floor is your priority.
Spend more in those areas and look for opportunities to save on things you care less about.
Set Your Wedding Budget Before Booking Vendors
Decide how much you're comfortable spending before you start signing contracts.
Break that total into categories like your venue, catering, photography and videography, DJ, flowers, attire, decorations, and transportation.
Don't forget to leave some room for unexpected expenses. Little things can add up surprisingly fast as your wedding gets closer.
Compare Value, Not Just Price
It's worth getting quotes from multiple Michigan wedding vendors, but don't automatically choose whoever is cheapest.
Look at what's actually included in each package. One photographer or videographer may initially cost more but include additional coverage, an engagement session, a second shooter, or other things you'd otherwise pay for separately.
Bundles can also be worth considering. Some wedding companies offer photography and videography together, which can simplify planning and potentially save money compared with hiring two completely separate teams.
Save Money on Things Guests Won't Remember
You don't necessarily need elaborate decorations everywhere.
Consider DIY decorations, renting instead of buying, using your venue's existing decor, or choosing a venue that's already beautiful without needing much added to it.
Ask yourself whether you'll care about that purchase five years from now. If the answer is probably not, that's a good place to reconsider the expense.
Give Yourself Plenty of Time
Last-minute wedding planning can get expensive.
Create a timeline for booking your major vendors, sending invitations, choosing outfits, finalizing your guest list, and handling smaller details.
Booking early also gives you more options instead of forcing you to choose from whoever happens to still be available.
Don't Forget to Actually Enjoy Your Wedding
It's easy to get so focused on creating the "perfect" wedding that you forget what the day is actually about.
Prioritize the things that matter to you, forget about the things you're only doing because you feel like you're supposed to, and build a wedding that actually feels like the two of you.

As a Detroit wedding photography and videography team, we’re always looking at venues a little differently. Beyond guest count and location, we think about natural light, architecture, outdoor spaces, getting-ready locations, and all the little details that can make your wedding photos and film feel incredible.
From historic Downtown Detroit ballrooms to glass conservatories surrounded by trees, here are some of the best wedding venues in Detroit and Metro Detroit to consider.
