Picking your venue

Planning a wedding in Metro Detroit? One of the biggest decisions you'll make is choosing a venue that actually feels like you.

As a Detroit wedding photography and videography team, we’re always looking at venues a little differently. Beyond guest count and location, we think about natural light, architecture, outdoor spaces, getting-ready locations, and all the little details that can make your wedding photos and film feel incredible.

From historic Downtown Detroit ballrooms to glass conservatories surrounded by trees, here are some of the best wedding venues in Detroit and Metro Detroit to consider.

Planterra Conservatory | West Bloomfield

If you're looking for a romantic garden wedding without leaving Metro Detroit, Planterra Conservatory should absolutely be on your list.

The glass-enclosed botanical conservatory is filled with natural light, greenery and architectural details, giving you the feeling of an outdoor garden wedding while still having the security of an indoor venue. Planterra hosts ceremonies and receptions on-site and specializes in weddings from September through May. Planterra

From a photography and videography perspective, this is the kind of venue that already gives you an incredible backdrop before you add much decoration.

Shepherd's Hollow | Clarkston

Shepherd's Hollow is one of the most distinctive wedding settings in Metro Detroit if you love nature.

The property sits among towering pine trees in Clarkston, and its glass-and-steel event space is surrounded by the forest. It gives you that Northern Michigan atmosphere without actually making all of your guests travel up north. Shepherds Hollow

For wedding photos and video, the combination of glass, natural light and huge pine trees gives you a ton of variety throughout the day.

Colony Club | Downtown Detroit

For couples wanting that classic, elegant Detroit look, The Colony Club is hard to overlook.

Located downtown, its Grand Ballroom features tall windows, chandeliers, ornate ceilings and a mezzanine overlooking the ballroom. The building dates back to the 1920s and has a completely different feel from a modern banquet hall. Forbes Detroit

It's especially beautiful if you want your wedding photos and film to have a timeless, upscale feel while still being right in the middle of Detroit.

Shinola Hotel | Downtown Detroit

For something modern while still feeling unmistakably Detroit, Shinola Hotel is a great option.

The hotel offers several wedding spaces, including Bixby Hall and the glass-ceilinged Birdy Room. Bixby Hall can accommodate up to 220 guests, while the Birdy Room offers an atrium-style atmosphere with a terrace and city views. Shinola Hotel

Being downtown also gives you access to Detroit architecture and streets for portraits without needing to travel far from your venue.

Meadow Brook Hall | Rochester Hills

If you've ever wanted to get married at a historic estate, Meadow Brook Hall is one of Metro Detroit's standout options.

The historic Rochester Hills property offers the mansion itself along with numerous gardens and outdoor settings. Visit Detroit

This is a great venue for couples who want a romantic, historic look with plenty of variety for portraits.

Gem Theatre | Downtown Detroit

The Gem Theatre is a great option if you want your Detroit wedding to actually feel like Detroit.

Located downtown near Comerica Park and Ford Field, the historic theater combines ornate architecture, warm interiors, theatrical spaces and an outdoor patio. Visit Detroit

The character of the building makes it especially interesting on video because you're not relying on decorations alone to give the wedding visual personality.

Which Detroit Wedding Venue Is Right for You?

There really isn't one perfect Detroit wedding venue for every couple.

If you love greenery and natural light, you may gravitate toward Planterra Conservatory or Shepherd's Hollow. If you want historic Detroit elegance, Colony Club or Gem Theatre might fit your vision. And if you're after something modern and downtown, Shinola Hotel gives you a completely different look.

The biggest thing is choosing a venue that feels like you and gives you the kind of atmosphere you want to remember years from now.
